Once a week male refugees and males who recently arrived in Germany meet at „Café Kumpel”. Café Kumpel focuses on the interests of the participants.

The project Café Kumpel tries to give refugees who had to leave their home country for different reasons the opportunity to talk to each other and show them long term options of making their everyday life diverse and interesting. One of the objectives of the meetings is showing educational opportunities, another is the interest related organization of leisure time.

After a long journey of fleeing their countries there is often a very long asylum procedure. German classes are often not planned by the government. Just like taking up employment, an active participation in the German educational system is often not possible. This causes doubt, disillusion and even depression anew.
To counteract this situation the Haus der Kulturen created Café Kumpel. A mix of recreational opportunities, education-specific and job-related education are to give young men the opportunity to organize their leisure time and to talk to other refugees. They also get the chance to an occupational orientation.

Movie nights, visiting a soccer training and casually being together are just as much part of the program as information nights about entering the German educational system, the recognition of school diplomas obtained in their home country or entering the German job market.
